Description
This stout " wine beaker" is 11 lbs 2 oz in weight. (There is no consensus as to the exact use of these vessels - ritual or utilitarian.) The mouth is 11" in diameter ; it is 12" high; 24" around the belly and the base is 7 1/2".This is probably among the most imposing of the ancient bronze ritual vessels.
The decorations are taotie masks on both sides flanked by chimera birds over a diaper of Greek keys. No scientific tests or professional authentication done on item. The green pigment maybe part "work over" but it does not appear to be a deliberate finish. It is important to note that archaic bronze designs from the Shang and Chou Periods were reproduced during the Sung and Ming dynasties. Buyer is advised to research archaic bronze history prototypes, the "anachronistic" evolution of motifs and decoration overtime yet faithful to the original bronze form. This piece for instance has a pronounced bat-like head central image. The relief decoration overall has depth but with noticeable crudity. Seller is unable to tell if this is moulded as one piece or if the parts were welded. Seller has not determined age of item and does not assert his opinion. This
item is being sold AS IS because of issues, though small and insignificant, may be of concern to a buyer. Buyer is advised to research all information provided and to examine photos closely.
