Description
This is a wonderful antique European 835 silver confiturier or jam vase with cobalt blue glass liner. These were also called a ‘Drageoir’ the only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (Hence a Jam Vase). It appears however that, originally, these pieces were mostly used a ceremonial sugar bowls. The open work reticulated silver body is on a square base. The beaded top also has a beaded articulated handle. Around the beaded top are twelve demilune slots for holding small spoons. The confiturier would generally be passed around the table with every on using a different spoon to take sugar, keeping the spoon with the coffee or tea cup.The confiturier stands 7 3/4 inches high (to the top of the handle. It is also 4 5/8 inches in diameter. The confiturier has a removable cobalt blue glass liner. The confiturier was made in the Netherlands. The handle has the Minerva assay mark with an “M” for Schoonhover. The base has the Dutch lion purity mark for .835 silver. The weight of the silver alone is 239 grams. Very fine condition.
