    Description

    Nikon SB-1
    Speedlight
Up for bids is this uncommon SB-1 speedlight - the flash unit that started it all for Nikon.
The SB-1 was launched in 1971 as Nikon's first 'potato masher' & thyristor style handle flash unit. It has a guide number of 28 at ISO 100/21º (fix angle covered of a 35mm lens, fixed reflector and no output-reducing facility). The flash unit could run on AC power by use of the SA-1 Charging Unit (included), or by NiCad batteries that fit into the handle, or by an optional SD-2 or SD-3 D cell battery pack.
An original NiCad is still stuffed inside the handle, but don't know how long if at all, they would hold a charge. According to specs, when fresh, the Charging Unit requires 15 hours to power up the batteries and you'll yield about 80 flashes.
The flash unit comes with its original SK-2 extension bracket for supporting the camera as well as an original sync cord. The power cord to the flash once was elastic banded and the elastic has solidified
This unique flash could also be used to provide power to Nikon's early ringlight flash units (the SR-1 & SM-1). A calculator on the rear of the flash enabled the user to calculate the f-stop based on the distance and ISO / ASA. The flash can also be tilted on the bracket to help emulate bounce flash
The unit was plugged in for a few hours and then powered on. The thyristor was heard as the unit started gerating power to the flash. After about 5 mintues of being powered on, I didn't see the 'ready light' illuminate on the back, but the flash did fire when the test button was pressed on the flash back. That was the extent of the testing done.
The flash cosmetics show typical wear from use and age. Some soiling to the casing. Please see photos which show all sides
