    Thomas Jefferson served as the Third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was also the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
    James Madison served as the Fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817.  He played a pivotal role in drafting and promoting the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
    Document is one page and measures 14.75" x 9.5". It is dated March 2nd, 1807. President Jefferson appoints Jeremiah Clarke "Collector for the State of New York." Signed at the
    conclusion
    in black ink, "Th: Jefferson", and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison.
    Nicely cloth matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Jefferson, to an overall size of 28.5" x 17". Visible on reverse is the letter of notification sent to Clarke from the Treasury Department. Light shade of circular toning under Jefferson's signature, previous storage folds and show-through from bold docketing on reverse, otherwise fine condition.
