Description
For sale is a modified ProCo Rat 2 distortion effects pedal. It is a Modest Mike modified 'Phat Rat 2' version, which allows you to switch between the normal Rat circuitry and the Ruetz mod circuit, along with other component/circuitry upgrades. Basically, the Rat by itself can be a harsh sounding pedal, depending on your purposes. This gives the option of a tamer distortion, which adds some thickness and warmth, which is more practical for non hardrock/metal purposes. It's definitely a more multi-dimensional RAT As you can see, there is some velcro on the bottom of the pedal. The feet have been removed, but they will be included. I also upgraded the knobs, as the factory ones were totally black, making it almost impossible to differentiate your settings. the current knobs are vastly superior. Pedal also comes with the factory box. The third image is a picture of the receipt, just so you know this was legitimately modded by Mike. Below is a description of some of the changes Mike makes in his mods. Not mentioned there is that Mike replaces the stock red LED with a blue one:About the mod:
A few years back I got my hands on the AMZ Ebook. I studied those mods, and then more study of variations of the original
Ruetz
Rat mod. We wanted to
smooth out that harshness
, and the Ruetz mod was a good start! Then we replaced a few key capacitors and resistors with
metal film capacitors and resistors
, some with different values. Jack Orman's mods (AMZ!) were a big help. We replaced the
op amp
(chip), but put in an
IC socket
to make it easier to try different chips. We added a
germanium diode
in series with one of the other diodes.
What a difference!
This mod
takes the edge off of the harshness.
This pedal now sounds
smoother,
more like an
overdrive/distortion
…instead of distortion gone wild. This
overdrive/distortion sound
was exactly what I was looking for. When the band gets loud, you can crank this baby way up now. We have
improved the bias
and
raised the input impedance.
This modded Rat 2 gets a
full bodied sound
, warm in the middle, and
remains transparent
when you push it. Instead of sounding like a noise in the background, your sound
cuts right through the mix
, and will be heard nice and clear above any band.
Our modified
Phat Rat
2
has it all...
no pedal stacking needed here!
Did You know?
In the late 90's the Pro Co folks were innovative in the art of true bypass. Most Rats are
true bypass
...not a buffered just as good as true bypass blah blah blah…usually it has hardwired true bypass. So keep in mind, if you are thinking about getting one of our "Phat Rats" you will have a great sounding pedal that does not suck tone!
*It seems strange to me t
hat the folks at Pro Co went to all that trouble, but then left the external power jack as one of those obsolete jacks that almost no one uses any more. That's not very convenient.
*So we drilled out the hole and replaced that baby with an up to date
standard
9 volt
DC jack!
Now, you can use most any 9 volt external power source, just like on your other 9 volt pedals!
No more batteries!
Well, you can still use a battery if you want to.
