Rare American Gorham Sterling Napkin Ring, Children Hatching From Eggs - Stunning
Gorham made some of the most outstanding American napkin rings of the 19th and early 20th century. This repousse napkin ring has an original and most charming design. Around the circumference of the napkin ring are four children who appear to be cracking through eggshells. There is a very young boy emerging with his little fists together. Next to him is a girl with her straw hat tipped back on her head and a flowering branch in her hand. A lad with a peaked hat comes out of another egg and a lass with her elaborate bonnet emerges. Between the four circular cartouches are a variety of flowering plants - from lily of the valley to sunflower. The background is stippled. The napkin ring is bordered with applied double narrow bands. Inside the rim of the napkin ring we see the name "Caroline." The marks are inside the rim - the old Gorham marks (lion, anchor, G), the word "sterling", and a pattern number 1370. This is a double walled napkin ring so although the designs are repousse, the interior of the napkin ring is smooth. The napkin ring weighs 48.2 grams (1.70 ounces). It is in beautiful condition.
