Description

Thomas Jefferson -
Clip Produced by Jefferson himself, as President
You are bidding on a clip produced in 1801 by Thomas Jefferson as U.S. President. Jefferson produced this piece via his letterpress device about two weeks after his first inauguration.
The clip contains Jefferson's actual handwritten ink that was physically transferred from its original handwritten letter.
In another interesting note, it was produced on the same day he moved into the White House: March 17, 1801.
The clip produced by Thomas Jefferson reads as follows:  "
Of Richmond....
"
The clip was cut from a larger, fantastic letterpress document that President Thomas Jefferson produced on March 17, 1801 in which he was writing to William Short regarding U.S. affairs with France, the XYZ affair, and other topics.  We personally cut the offered autograph clip from that very document.
A letterpress is the author’s own ink and exact writing pressed onto another sheet that is thinner. It is a
method of applying plain moistened paper with pressure to a freshly written letter so the ink from the original would be offset onto the new thin paper sheet.
Outside of institutions these are very rare.
The document was purchased by the current sellers from University Archives, a world renowned seller and authentication service of historical documents.
There is a transcript of this actual letter at the National Archives (founders.gov), which can be viewed here:
